Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has taken an X-ray of 39 districts regarding the damage that a devastating earthquake could inflict on the megacity. A booklet was prepared for each district in the research conducted in collaboration with Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory Earthquake Research Institute using the data from the “Istanbul Province Possible Earthquake Loss Estimates Update Project/2019”.
Blue tones: Hard ground (Vs30 high). Earthquake waves do not grow much here.
Yellow-orange-red tones: Soft ground (Vs30 low). Ground amplification may occur in these regions during an earthquake.
Light green tones: Medium hard ground.
Islands: According to estimates, 23% of the buildings on the Islands will not be damaged, 29% will be slightly damaged, 30% will be moderately damaged, 12% will be severely damaged, and 6% will be very severely damaged. 48% of the buildings, or 3,000 buildings, are expected to be moderately and above damaged. Severely and very severely damaged buildings will need to be demolished. 9,500 people will need emergency shelter.
Ataşehir: On average, 63% of the buildings in Ataşehir will not be damaged, 24% will be slightly damaged, 10% will be moderately damaged, 2% will be severely damaged, and 1% will be very severely damaged. Approximately 3,400 buildings will be moderately damaged or above. The number of buildings that will survive the earthquake with minor or no damage is approximately 24,200. It is estimated that 45,000 people will have emergency sheltering problems.
Arnavutköy: An average of 78% of the buildings in Arnavutköy will not be damaged. 15% will be slightly damaged, 5% moderately damaged, 1% severely damaged, and 1% very severely damaged. Approximately 2,000 buildings will be moderately or more severely damaged. It is estimated that 30,000 buildings will be undamaged or slightly damaged. Approximately 17,500 people will need emergency shelter.
Avcılar: Expectations indicate that approximately 61% of buildings in Avcılar will be damaged, while 39% will not be damaged. An average of 34% of buildings will be slightly damaged, 21% moderately damaged, 5% severely damaged, and 1% very severely damaged. The number of buildings that will be moderately and above damaged is 7,000. 20,000 buildings will be undamaged or slightly damaged. 100,000 people will need urgent shelter.
Bağcılar: An average of 39% of buildings in Bağcılar will not be damaged, 36% will be slightly damaged, 19% will be moderately damaged, 4% will be severely damaged, and 2% will be very severely damaged. It is estimated that 10,600 buildings will be moderately or more damaged. The number of undamaged or slightly damaged buildings is calculated as 32,000. The number of people who will need emergency shelter is 178,600.
Bahçelievler: 24% of the buildings in Bahçelievler will not be damaged, 76% will be negatively affected. 42% of the buildings will be slightly damaged, 25% moderately damaged, 6% severely damaged, and 3% very severely damaged. Approximately 8,000 buildings will be moderately and above damaged. 14,800 buildings will survive the earthquake with no damage or minor damage, and 183,600 people will need emergency shelter.
Bakırköy: 21% of buildings in Bakırköy will not be damaged, 33% will be slightly damaged, 28% will be moderately damaged, 11% will be severely damaged, and 7% will be very severely damaged. It is estimated that 5,500 buildings will be moderately and above damaged. The number of buildings that will survive the earthquake with no damage or minor damage is 6,500. Approximately 87,000 people will need emergency shelter.
Başakşehir: 62% of buildings in Başakşehir will not be damaged, 24% will be slightly damaged, 11.5% moderately damaged, 2% severely damaged, and 0.5% very severely damaged. 14% of buildings, approximately 3,700 buildings, will be moderately and above damaged, and 22,100 buildings will be either slightly damaged or not damaged at all. Approximately 40,000 people will be in urgent need of shelter.
Beşiktaş: Approximately 78% of the buildings in Beşiktaş were built in 2000 and before, and it is estimated that 72% will not be damaged in a possible earthquake. 20% of the buildings will be slightly damaged, 6.5% will be moderately damaged, and 1% will be severely damaged. The number of buildings that will be moderately and severely damaged is calculated as 1,300. 12,300 people will need emergency shelter.
Beykoz: 79% of buildings in Beykoz will not be damaged, the number of buildings that will survive the earthquake with or without minor damage is 48 thousand. 14% of buildings will be slightly damaged, 5% moderately damaged, 0.86% severely damaged, and 0.22% very severely damaged. It is estimated that 7% of buildings, or 3,300, will be moderately and above damaged. 17,800 people will have urgent sheltering problems.
Bayrampaşa: In Bayrampaşa, 35% of the buildings will be slightly damaged, 19% moderately damaged, 6% severely damaged, and 3% very severely damaged. Approximately 5,900 buildings are expected to be moderately or more severely damaged. 37% of the buildings will not be damaged. The number of buildings that will survive the earthquake with slight or no damage is 15,000. 70,000 people will face urgent shelter needs.
Beylikdüzü: 33% of buildings will not be damaged, 34% will be slightly damaged, 24% will be moderately damaged, 7% will be severely damaged and 2% will be very severely damaged. It is estimated that 34% of buildings, approximately 4,300, will be moderately damaged and above, while 8,500 buildings are expected to be undamaged or slightly damaged. The number of people who will need emergency shelter is approximately 80,000.
Beyoğlu: 58% of the buildings in Beyoğlu will not be damaged, 26% will be slightly damaged, 11% will be moderately damaged, 3% will be severely damaged, and 2% will be very severely damaged. 4,400 buildings are expected to have moderate or higher levels of damage, while approximately 23,000 buildings are expected to have slight or no damage. The number of people who will need emergency shelter is 31,000.
Büyükçekmece: It is estimated that 42% of the buildings in Büyükçekmece will not be damaged, 22,700 buildings will be slightly damaged or will not be damaged at all. It is expected that 30% of the buildings will be slightly damaged, 21% moderately damaged, 5% severely damaged, and 2% very severely damaged. The number of buildings that will be moderately and severely damaged is 8,700, and the number of people who will need emergency shelter is 73,000.
Çatalca: 78% of the buildings in Çatalca will not be damaged, 14% will be slightly damaged, 6% will be moderately damaged, 1% will be severely damaged, and 0.23% will be very severely damaged. It is estimated that 7% of the buildings, i.e. 2,000 buildings, will be moderately and above damaged, while the number of buildings that will be slightly damaged or not damaged at all is calculated as 25,300. 5,800 people will need emergency shelter.
Çekmeköy: 78% of the buildings in Çekmeköy will survive the earthquake without damage, 16% will have light, 5% moderate, 0.5% severe, and 0.07% very severe damage. It is estimated that 5% of the buildings will have moderate or higher damage, which corresponds to approximately 1,100 buildings. Approximately 12,000 people will face urgent shelter needs.
Esenler: It is estimated that 46% of the buildings in Esenler will not be damaged, and 18,900 buildings will survive the earthquake with no damage or minor damage. 33% of the buildings will be slightly damaged, 16% moderately, 3% severely, and 2% very severely damaged. The number of buildings that will be moderately or more damaged is approximately 5,000. 94,000 people will need emergency shelter.
Esenyurt: An average of 38% of buildings in Esenyurt will be slightly damaged, 20% moderately damaged, 4% severely damaged and 1.4% very severely damaged. The number of buildings that will be moderately and above damaged is 10,500. 36% of buildings will not be damaged. The number of buildings that will survive the earthquake with slight or no damage is approximately 28,500. More than 200,000 people will need emergency shelter.
Eyüpsultan: Scenarios show that 61% of buildings in Eyüpsultan will not be damaged. The number of buildings that will be slightly or not damaged at all is 30,000. 25% of the buildings will be slightly damaged, 11% moderately, 2.4% severely, and 0.87% very severely damaged. Approximately 5,000 buildings are estimated to be moderately and above damaged, while 50,000 people will need urgent shelter.
Fatih: 28% of the buildings in Fatih will not be damaged, 36% will be slightly damaged, 23% will be moderately damaged, 8% will be severely damaged, and 5% will be very severely damaged. 15,500 buildings, 36% of the total building stock, will be moderately and severely damaged. Approximately 28,000 buildings are expected to be undamaged or slightly damaged. 140,000 people will need urgent shelter.
Gaziosmanpaşa: 23% of the buildings in Gaziosmanpaşa will be slightly damaged, 8% moderately damaged, 1.5% severely damaged, and 0.5% very severely damaged. Approximately 2,800 buildings will be moderately and above damaged, while 67%, i.e. 26,500 buildings, will survive the earthquake with no damage or minor damage. 42,000 people will need shelter.
Kartal: 27% of the buildings in Kartal will be slightly damaged, 10% moderately damaged, 2% severely damaged, and 1% very severely damaged. It is estimated that approximately 4,000 buildings will be moderately and above damaged, which corresponds to 13% of the buildings in Kartal. It is estimated that 60% of the buildings will not be damaged, and 54,500 people will need emergency shelter.
Kağıthane: 73% of the buildings in Kağıthane will not be damaged, 20% will be slightly damaged, 6% will be moderately damaged, 0.7% will be severely damaged, and 0.3% will be very severely damaged. It is estimated that 7% of the buildings, i.e. 2,000 buildings, will be moderately and above damaged, while 27 buildings will survive the earthquake with no damage or minor damage. It is estimated that 30,000 people will need emergency shelter.
Kadıköy: 60% of buildings in Kadıköy will not be damaged. The number of buildings with or without minor damage is calculated as 22 thousand. 27% of the buildings will be slightly damaged, 10% moderately damaged, 2% severely damaged, and 1% very severely damaged. It is estimated that approximately 3,100 buildings will be moderately and above damaged. The number of people who will need emergency shelter is 41 thousand.
Güngören: 27% of the buildings in Güngören will not be damaged, 42% will be slightly damaged, 22% will be moderately damaged, 6% will be severely damaged, and 3% will be very severely damaged. It is estimated that 31% of the buildings, i.e. 3,400 buildings, will be moderately and above damaged, and the number of undamaged or slightly damaged buildings will be approximately 7,600. The number of people who will have emergency sheltering problems is 82,500.
Küçükçekmece: 34% of the buildings in Küçükçekmece will not be damaged, 34% will be slightly damaged, 22% will be moderately damaged, 7% will be severely damaged, and 3% will be very severely damaged. The number of buildings that will be moderately and above damaged is 12,300. Approximately 27,300 buildings will be undamaged or slightly damaged by the earthquake. 218,000 people will need emergency shelter.
Sarıyer: 80% of the buildings in Sarıyer will not be damaged, 14% will be slightly damaged, 5% will be moderately damaged, 0.7% will be severely damaged, and 0.3% will be very severely damaged. 6% of the buildings (approximately 3,000 buildings) will be moderately and above damaged, while 46,400 buildings will be undamaged or slightly damaged. The number of people who will need emergency shelter is approximately 20,000.
Silivri: 24% of buildings in Silivri are expected to suffer light damage, 14% moderate damage, 3% severe damage, and 1% very severe damage. 18% of buildings, approximately 9,300 buildings, will suffer moderate or higher damage, while 58%, 40,800 buildings, will be undamaged or slightly damaged. 40,000 people will need urgent shelter.
Maltepe: 57% of buildings in Maltepe will not be damaged, approximately 24,400 buildings will survive the earthquake with minor or no damage. 28% of buildings will be slightly damaged, 12% moderately damaged, 2% severely damaged, and 1% very severely damaged. Approximately 4,300 buildings, or 15% of the total stock, will be moderately and above damaged. 60,000 people will need emergency shelter.
Pendik: 60% of buildings in Pendik will not be damaged, meaning 44,600 buildings will emerge from the earthquake undamaged or slightly damaged. 26% of buildings will be slightly damaged, 11% moderately damaged, 2% severely damaged, and 1% very severely damaged. 14% of buildings (approximately 7,000 buildings) will be moderately and above damaged. 85,000 people will need emergency shelter.
Sancaktepe: 68% of the buildings in Sancaktepe will not be damaged. 27,300 buildings will survive the earthquake either undamaged or with minor damage. 22% of the buildings will be slightly damaged, 8% moderately, 1.5% severely, and 0.5% very severely damaged. It is estimated that approximately 3,000 buildings, or 10% of the total building stock, will be moderately and above damaged. 40,000 people will have housing problems.
Şişli: It is estimated that 72% of the buildings in Şişli will not be damaged, and 19,500 buildings will survive the earthquake with either no damage or minor damage. 21% of the buildings are expected to have minor damage, 5% moderate damage, 1% severe damage, and 1% very severe damage. 7% of the building stock (1,300 buildings) will have moderate and higher damage. 14,500 people will have urgent sheltering problems.
Sultanbeyli: According to expectations, 61% of the buildings in Sultanbeyli will not be damaged, 24.6% will be slightly damaged, 12% will be moderately damaged, 2% will be severely damaged, and 0.4% will be very severely damaged. 14.4% of the buildings in the district (approximately 4,700 buildings) will be moderately damaged or above. Approximately 29,200 buildings will be either undamaged or slightly damaged. 50,000 people will need shelter.
Sultangazi: 73% of the buildings in Sultangazi will not be damaged, 20% will be slightly damaged, 5.8% will be moderately damaged, 1% will be severely damaged, and 0.2% will be very severely damaged. It is estimated that 2,100 of the buildings, or 7%, will be moderately and above damaged, while 31,900 buildings are expected to be undamaged or slightly damaged. 35,000 people will face urgent shelter problems.
Zeytinburnu: 40% of the buildings in Zeytinburnu will be slightly damaged, 24% moderately damaged, 6% severely damaged, and 3% very severely damaged. It is estimated that 33% of the buildings (approximately 5,300 buildings) will be moderately and above damaged, and 27% will not be damaged. The number of buildings expected to be undamaged or slightly damaged is 10,700, and the number of people in need of urgent shelter is 93,000.
Tuzla: 28% of buildings in Tuzla will suffer light damage, 19% moderate damage, 5% severe damage, and 2% very severe damage. It is estimated that 26% of buildings in the district (approximately 7,100 buildings) will suffer moderate or higher damage, and 46% will survive the earthquake without damage. 21,200 buildings are expected to be undamaged or slightly damaged, and 64,250 people will be in urgent need of shelter.
Ümraniye: 72% of buildings in Ümraniye will not be damaged, approximately 48,350 buildings will be slightly damaged or will survive the earthquake without damage. 20% of buildings will be slightly damaged, 7% moderately damaged, 0.9% severely damaged, and 0.1% very severely damaged. It is estimated that 9% of buildings (approximately 4,300 buildings) will be moderately damaged or above. 50,000 people will need shelter.
Üsküdar: 67% of buildings in Üsküdar will not be damaged, 23% will be slightly damaged, 8% will be moderately damaged, 1.5% will be severely damaged, and 0.5% will be very severely damaged. It is estimated that 10% of buildings in the district (approximately 4,000 buildings) will be moderately damaged or above, while approximately 37,800 buildings are expected to be undamaged or slightly damaged. 45,300 people will need emergency shelter.
Şile: 83.2% of buildings in Şile will not be damaged. Approximately 19,000 buildings will survive the earthquake either undamaged or with minor damage. 12% of buildings are expected to have minor damage, 4% moderate damage, 0.6% severe damage, and 0.2% very severe damage. 4.8% of buildings will have moderate or higher damage. 2,600 people will have emergency sheltering problems.
